Pastor Bill Godair: Promoting community growth
Pastor Bill Godair knows what it’s like to be down.
He’s been broke, divorced and lost.
Despite that, the lead pastor at Cornerstone Church has found hope and passed it on.
“In the last few years, the weak economy has really affected a lot of folks in Rowan County and across our great nation,” he said. “I believe that there are folks that have just simply given up the hope of a tomorrow or of a future.”
But he says he still believes “God wants his people to prosper.”

Cornerstone church marks 25 years of growth
SALISBURY — Pastor Bill Godair arrived to a congregation of seven people when he moved to Salisbury in 1986.
Since then, Cornerstone Church has outgrown two buildings and is busting at the seams in the one it occupies now, with attendance reaching 1,000 people some Sundays.
“I came here to build a church, but I never dreamed it would grow this much,” Godair said.
The church celebrated its 25th anniversary Sunday by looking to the future.

Volunteers turn out to help at Knox
SALISBURY — Community members are making good on a promise to help revitalize Knox Middle School.
A group of about 100 volunteers showed up at the school Monday, one week after Cornerstone Church Pastor Bill Godair and a dozen church members toured the rundown campus.
“We’re really proud to be down here to help clean this school up because it’s needed it for quite some time,” church member Vernell Lee said.
Lee’s grandson Anthony Vaughters, a junior at Salisbury High School, attended Knox.

Cornerstone Church buys land along I-85
Bill Godair, lead pastor at Cornerstone Church, says his congregation’s purchase of close to 46 acres along Interstate 85 holds many opportunities for the church.
“It really prepares us for good growth in the future,” Godair said Thursday.
A week ago, the church bought 45.88 acres along Interstate 85 at N.C. 152 and U.S. 29. Much of the land — four tracts in all, with some property on each side of I-85 — used to be part of the Whit Wilhelm farm.

Cornerstone Church remodels member’s home
LEXINGTON — Delorest Lattimore never imagined coming home from a trip to Texas on Wednesday that she would be greeted by nearly 100 friends and neighbors who surprised her with a remodeled home.
The early Christmas gift was an act of love conspired by members of Lattimore's church, Cornerstone Church in Salisbury. She was greeted with hugs, cheers and applause by church members, co-workers, neighbors and community members who offered their support.
“Thank you to everybody,” Lattimore said in tears after she arrived in a limousine. “I could have never imaged this. Thank you Lord, it's beautiful.”

Church members spread cheer
Niki Lewis, a single mom and full-time student whose husband died last year, didn’t know how she would be able to get her Nadaliegh, 8, a proper coat for the winter this year.
Her worry ended Saturday after the young members of Cornerstone Church visited her neighborhood, giving away coats, hats, scarves and gloves — an initiative developed by young churchgoers.
“It’s a blessing,” she said. “The (coat) she has now outgrown she’s had for three years.”
Nadaliegh’s new pink coat fit perfectly, as did the pink toboggan and pink gloves.

Cornerstone event center opens
The Rev. Bill Godair said his new event center at Cornerstone Church rivals anything churches in bigger cities use for worship.
He and his wife, Tina, led a black-tie event Friday night for about 300 to celebrate the center, which was used for the first time Easter Sunday. Some minor construction efforts continue, but most of the project is complete.
A jazz band and harpist were part of Friday evening's entertainment at the 315 Webb Road location, which can handle any number of musical ensembles.

Biggest Loser
Cornerstone Church is one of Rowan County's fastest growing, bringing together whites, blacks and Hispanics for lively services.
But come the first Sunday of February, the pastoral staff wants to see considerably less of Cornerstone's congregation.
A whopping 1,000 pounds less, actually.
