Three honored with humanitarian awards

The Salisbury Civic Center was filled Thursday night with people gathered to celebrate a pastor, a nurse and an educator.

It was a night of celebrations for recipients of the 2010 Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Humanitarian Award and to honor Koontz's legacy.

This year's recipients are the Rev. Bill Godair, lead pastor of Cornerstone Church; Emma Archie Hunter, a longtime nurse who recently retired from Rowan Regional Medical Center; and Linda Kaye Stoner, who retired from the Rowan-Salisbury School System after more than 33 years.

Jeysson Sanchez, a student at Koontz Elementary School, received a standing ovation after speaking about why everyone was gathered.

Helping Women Unlock Their Potential

Purses, pampering and pretty things were all enjoyed at the second annual Women's Expo and Bridal Show, held Saturday at The Event Center of Cornerstone Church in Salisbury.

The theme for the expo, "Day of the Diva," truly lived up to the experience for all who attended.

More than 50 vendors put their best products on display. From stationery, makeup, massages, jewelry, purses, caterers and party supplies, there was something for every diva.

Chena Jackson, jewelry maker and owner of Fab Bu Less Jewelry, took advantage of the vendor space, placing her favorites on display at the expo.

MLK day: Breakfast kicks off celebration

"When I say unity, you say works. Unity...works...unity ...works." It was a chant heard early Monday morning by Elder Timothy Bates, master of ceremonies for the 24th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

Bates rallied the crowd, members of which gathered inside The Event Center, on the campus of Cornerstone Church, by chanting the theme of this year's celebration. About 600 people gathered Monday for the annual Humanitarian Breakfast, which was held for the second year at The Event Center.
"It's a pleasure that God's people are all in the same room and are all on the same team," he said.

Cornerstone Event Center Opens

The Rev. Bill Godair said his new event center at Cornerstone Church rivals anything churches in bigger cities use for worship.

He and his wife, Tina, led a black-tie event Friday night for about 300 to celebrate the center, which was used for the first time Easter Sunday. Some minor construction efforts continue, but most of the project is complete.

A jazz band and harpist were part of Friday evening's entertainment at the 315 Webb Road location, which can handle any number of musical ensembles.

The 16,000-square-foot center, which has its own Web site (www.theeventcenter.net), can hold 700, plus another 200 to 300 in the atrium area. Bill Godair said he wanted to make it something the community beyond church members could use, so it wouldn't sit empty Monday through Saturday. He plans on renting it to the public for things like weddings, political events and concerts. Representatives from Barack Obama's team have already scouted the site as a possible campaign stop....

Christian music icon performs today in Salisbur

If you were tapped into the Christian music scene 15 or 20 years ago, you surely knew the name Carman. No last name necessary for this stadium-packing performer. At one Dallas concert, more than 71,000 people attended.

In 1990, Billboard Magazine named him the first Contemporary Christian artist of the year. He has earned 15 gold and platinum albums, selling more than 10 million albums.

He's been described as part evangelist, part Vegas showman. Think rock and roll Billy Graham Crusade.

His talent extends beyond inspirational singing, however. He wrote and starred in the movie "R.I.O.T" in 1997, training for fight scenes with Rorion and Royce Gracie, of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts organization.

He's written songs for several movies, including Disney's "Prince of Egypt" and the documentary "Jesus Camp."

His current movie project, which will likely be out next year, Carman says, is called "Jack and the Big 10." Carman wrote the script for the film, which will explore the question "Can a man break all ten commandments and still hope for a bright future?"

He wants his films to be real, he says, with Christians speaking the way real people speak. For now, his stadium days are behind him. His recent approach to audiences in his "Carman: For real — for now" tour is more intimate, focusing more on speaking than music — although don't worry, you'll still hear plenty of the music that he's famous for.

Carman is appearing at 7 p.m. this evening at Cornerstone Church's Event Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. A seating pass is $5...

The Event Center hosts wedding gala with 50 varied vendors

Brides filled The Event Center Saturday to attend Cornerstone Church’s very first occasion there: The Bride Show.

Billboards had heralded the event for weeks. All kinds of brides filled the aisles to study the vendors’ offerings: young brides, older brides, confident brides, giddy brides, stylish brides and casual brides.

The event featured 50 or so vendors who offered every option for the wedding. There were those vendors you might expect: wedding planners, florists, caterers, photographers, bridal shops, tux rentals, hair salons, and makeup artists. In all, there were 11 caterers, most of them offering a taste of their wares. Seven photographers displayed samples of their wedding craft.

There were also vendors you might not expect: teeth whiteners, the Salisbury Trolley, a real estate vendor, Verizon Wireless, jewelry shops, and weight loss plans. The Forum, a local gym, offered a Bridal Boot Camp, eight weeks of intensive workouts coupled with nutritional and diet guidance.

The Event Center is the worship area for Cornerstone Church on Webb Road. A large building that seats 700, it was built with events in mind. A loading dock backs up to the stage so that if needed, performers can unload equipment. Two green rooms flank the stage, outfitted with comfy furniture and private baths with showers. A sophisticated lighting system and audio system add to the drama.

The featured guest of the day was Angela Ramos. Ramos recently moved to Orlando from Hollywood, where she served as a correspondent for Jay Leno for five years. Today she serves as a stylist and personality serving Life Style and InTouch magazines....

Speakers: King's dream being realized

Speakers at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in Rowan County Monday morning spoke often of the connection between King's legacy and the presidential inauguration that will take place today in Washington, D.C.

On the eve of history, the Rev. Whayne Hougland Jr. said it was appropriate for the community to come together — 700 strong — as King's inclusive and sometimes elusive dream for a nation becomes "somewhat more real" with Barack Obama's pending presidency.

Hougland, rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and vice chairman of the Salisbury-Rowan Human Relations Council, said he thought back to the scene at Grant Park in Chicago when hundreds of thousands of people of all races gathered to celebrate the election of Obama....
